Since early June, Townsville PD has not had caller ID.
I know it's not essential and we can always ask for the callers phone numbers, but you would be amazed at how many people refuse to give their number and get almost hostile about it. If you care enough to call and give me your name and address why is it so hard to give your phone number? It's almost as bad as the people that call because they saw little Johnny all alone on the street crying but don't stop to see if he was hurt or not.
Before when people asked why we needed their number the standard response was, "to verify our information." Now the response is, "we don't have caller ID and we might need to reach you again." The caller usually laughs or says something like you've got to be kidding. Well believe it folks, no caller ID here!
Maybe the caller ID repair man is like Santa. I'll write a note,
Dear Mr. Repair Man,
Please come and fix my caller ID and make our lives/jobs easier. It could really help us when we need to flip a coin (because Sherry and Raven keep calling and we hate answering those calls twice in a row.) It could also give us a number for the lost drunk man, then we can do a reverse look up and at least find out his name (and after that his address to send help). And for the caller that is a complete and utter jerk and refuses to give us any info other then his location, it's nice to have his number so we can call back for more information while he curses us under his breath... Oh please caller ID repair man, you're all we humble dispatchers ask for.

We here at our PD do not have caller ID at all! The only time I know who is calling is if they call on the 911 line. I feel this is absolutely ridiculous for it being 2009 and we cant see who is calling or call them back unless we do *69. Stone age!!!!! Time is of the essence people in charge! great post
ReplyDeleteI have a relative who refused to call the police when she heard her neighbor beating up his wife because she knew she'd have to give her name.
ReplyDeleteShe didn't want him to know who called. So my question is do the police tell who called them or is there a way for the person to find out who called on them?

ReplyDeleteGoddess-I know here they do not release the caller information for any reason. She can always call and say that she doesn't want to speak with anyone and to remain anonymous.
